Fifth RHESSI Workshop

Ascona, Switzerland

June 7-11, 2005

Group 1: Electron Acceleration and Propagation

Group Leader:
Gordon Holman
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center
Code 671

Registered Group Members

Summary

Group 1 focused on deducing electron distributions from photon spectra,
and on closely related topics such as spectral evolution, electron energetics,
and the impact of albedo, a return current, and a hot target plasma
on X-ray spectra. Observations related to electron acceleration models
and the status of X-ray polarization measurements were also discussed.

Fourth RHESSI Workshop
Meudon, France, 25-28 July 2004

Outline of Topics and Sequence of Discussion

  • Spectral inversion and forward-fit methods
    • How do they work?
    • How well do they work?
  • The low-energy "cutoff" of accelerated electron distributions and electron energetics
    • How well can we determine the location and shape?
    • What impact do albedo, a return current, and a hot target have on this?
  • Correlations of flare properties and their implications
  • Time evolution of flare X-ray spectra and implications
  • Electron acceleration models and related observations
  • X-ray polarization
  • Imaging spectroscopy (special Friday evening session)
