Mentors Wanted

Who: Goddard Space Flight Center Employees

What: To mentor sixth grade teachers

When: July 13th through August 13th, 2004

The SUNBEAMS Program is looking for scientists, engineers, technicians, machinists, programmers, and other Goddard personnel, who are interested in enriching science education, to mentor teachers this summer. Mentors are responsible for helping teachers meet the requirements of their SUNBEAMS internship, which are to become involved in current NASA research and/or projects and develop hands-on activities related to those projects. During the internship, mentors will need to provide background materials and information to enable the teacher to become familiar with the mentor's work and provide a work area for the teacher that includes a computer connected to the Internet.

Because it is a major goal of the SUNBEAMS Program is to foster long-term partnerships between Goddard employees and local teachers, the responsibilities of SUNBEAMS Mentors extend beyond the five-week Summer Internship. During the school year, mentors will need to be available to spend time with the group of students when their teacher brings them to Goddard, attend Family Night* at the school, and make at least one other visit to the school during the day.

Interested GSFC employees should send a brief description of the project or mission in which they will involve the teacher along with their address, phone, fax and Email to the SUNBEAMS Program office at the address below. Information may be mailed or submitted by fax or email. All materials should be received by March 19, 2004. Mentor participation will be confirmed by April 13, 2004.

(*Assistance will be provided to secure government cars and assure that no one will be obliged to travel alone.)
