Teachers Wanted

Who: Sixth Grade Teachers from D.C. and Baltimore City

What: To participate in an innovative science education program

When: July 13th through August 13th, 2004

Where: Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland

SUNBEAMS teachers' participation in the program will begin with a five-week paid internship held at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The Center is home to the Nation's largest organization of combined scientists and engineers dedicated to learning and sharing their knowledge of the Earth, Solar System, and Universe. Goddard Space Flight Center is engaged in developing and operating scientific spacecraft. Each teacher will be paired with a Goddard mentor and will spend the five weeks assisting their mentor with various scientific research and/or project responsibilities and creating standards-based, hands-on lessons to share with their students.

Each teacher will return to Goddard with a class of up to 30 students, sometime during the following school year, for a week-long immersion in math and science activities. The activities are standards-based and designed to give students an understanding of the methods used by Goddard scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop and operate scientific spacecraft. The SUNBEAMS staff will organize a Family Night for each teacher's group at the school.

Each interested teacher should submit a cover letter and resume as well as a letter of recommendation/support from their principal. Letters from principals should address the following questions:
