SOLAR PHYSICS RESEARCH

I graduated from Queen's University, Belfast in the summer of 2000 with a first class MSci honours in Physics with Astrophysics. In September 2000, I started a Phd entitled

Low-Frequency Observations of the Solar Atmosphere

in the Astrophysics and Planetary Science Division under the supervision of Prof. Francis Keenan and Dr Mihalis Mathioudakis. I also had a lot of help from Dr Peter Gallagher (based at Goddard Space Flight Centre) and Dr. David Williams (based at Mullard Space Science Laboratory.) This work was funded by a PhD studentship from the Department of Employment and Learning (DEL), and a CAST award from Queen's University. I submitted my thesis on 14 November 2003. I completed my viva on 22 December 2003, with Prof. E. Priest from St. Andrews as my external examiner and Dr. A Fitzsimmons from QUB as my internal examiner. I graduated with my Ph.D. June 2004.The full thesis can be viewed by clicking the title above, or can be downloaded in either postscript or acrobat format.

In March 2004 I started an National Research Council Research Associateship at NASA / Goddard Space Flight Centre. The main subject od this work is to quantify active region magnetic complexity in an automated manner. This work is carried out in collaboration with Peter Gallagher, Jack Ireland and Alex Young

PROJECTS

I'm still involved in several solar projects running in the solar group. The main project of my PhD was searching for oscillations in the chromosphere, using multi-wavelength observations taken at the Dunn Solar Telescope, NSO/Sacramento Peak. This work was extended into the Transition Region. The statistical tools used in this project, and the extended use of IDL involved, are also used in the other areas of research in the solar group. A full description of the areas where I am involved can be found on the projects page. This project has been further extended using better data, and wavelet phase analysis by Shaun Bloomfield
