Visibilities and Modulation Patterns

The word ``visibility'' was coined by radio astronomers, and has crept into the lexicon of x-ray astronomers by way of the Rotation Modulation Collimator, which is the equivalent of Earth Rotation Synthesis in radio astronomy. Since the use of visibilities may not be clear to all, it is worth going through their application to x-ray imaging.
