The Phase Ambiguity

Inspection of the solution shows that $\alpha$ is only determined modulo $\pi$. Just as in the shadow of a rotating object, the direction of rotation cannot be determined without outside information, the phase has an ambiguity of $180^{\circ}$. One of the two solutions, however, gives negative amplitude, and rejecting that solution resolves the ambiguity.
