How to Update Windows Using Internet Explorer
If Internet Explorer is installed on your system, first determine the version that you have:
1.    Start Internet Explorer.
2.    From the top of the browser tool bar select "Help".
3.    From the drop down panel select "About Internet Explorer".
4.    A window will appear displaying the version number.


Upgrade instructions for users with Internet Explorer 4.0 (or later versions):
All other users, should skip to the instructions for other browsers below.

1.    Save your work and close all programs on your PC.
2.    Start Internet Explorer.
3.    From the top of the browser tool bar select "Tools".
4.    From the drop down panel select "Windows Update" which will display the Microsoft Windows Update web page.
5.    On the resulting web page click "Product Updates".
6.    Scroll down the next page and check the box next to the latest version of Internet Explorer.  Do not check any other boxes on this page.
        (At the time of this writing, version 5.5 was the latest).
7.    Click the blue "download" arrow.  Confirm your selection on the "Download Checklist" web page.
8.    Click "Start Download" under Step #3.  Click "Yes" in the "License Agreement"  window that appears.
9.    A gray panel entitled "Microsoft Windows Update" will appear while the setup program is downloading to your hard drive.
10.  Once again, a white and blue "License Agreement" panel will appear.  Accept the agreement and click "Next".
11.  Choose "Install Now - Typical set of components" and click "Next".
12.  At this point an installation progress window will appear while the upgrade proceeds for several minutes.
13.  When the upgrade is complete, select "Yes" to restart your computer.


Instructions for Netscape Users and Internet Explorer 3.0 users (or earlier versions):
1.    Save your work and close all programs on your PC.
2.    Start your internet browser and go to the URL:    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/
3.    Click the blue "Download Now" button.  On the next page click the gray "Download Now" button.
4.    Save the file "ie5setup.exe" to your Desktop.  (At the time of this writing, Internet Explorer 5.5 was the latest version).
6.    Close your browser and locate the newly saved file on your PC Desktop.
7.    Double click the setup file to begin upgrading.
8.    A white and blue "License Agreement" panel will appear.  Accept the agreement and click "Next".
9.    Choose "Install Now - Typical set of components" and click "Next".
10.  At this point an installation progress window will appear while the upgrade proceeds for several minutes.
11.  When the upgrade is complete, select "Yes" to restart your computer.
12.  After rebooting, start Internet Explorer.
13.  From the top of the browser tool bar select "Tools".
14.  From the drop down panel select "Windows Update" which will display the Microsoft Windows Update web page.
15.  On the resulting web page click "Product Updates".
16.  Under the title "Select Software" click the blue "Show Installed Updates" button.
17.  Scroll down the list and check any applicable critical and security updates.  Do not check the box next to Internet Explorer.
18.  Click the blue "download" arrow.  Confirm your selections on the "Download Checklist" web page.
19.  Click "Start Download" under Step #3.  Click "Yes" in the "License Agreement"  window that appears.
20.  A gray panel entitled "Microsoft Windows Update" will appear while the update program is downloading to your hard drive.
21.  When the update is complete, select "Yes" to restart your computer.
