RHESSI tohban report, October 14, 2002 Reporting Period: October 1-14, 2002 Tohban: H. Hudson, S. Krucker Solar activity: A spate of 11 M-class flares Oct. 3-6, followed by a quiet Sun until 00:00 UT 14-Oct (today). Currently a "slow LDE" at C4 level is probably wreaking havoc with our SSR level. Spacecraft: No particular problems known to the tohbans. An ATS upload problem on the 14th will have caused a gap. Is the cryostat accelerometer level increasing? Recent weeks show levels of about 15, as opposed to about 10 early in the mission. Memory management and shutter operations: Thanks to 3 Santiago passes per day for several days last week, the memory load came down to zero and we were able to keep the shutter in A013, starting October 7 (11:41). Thus we will have achieved about a week of A013 data. The electron storm problem continues. Please see http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~hessiops/state-of-health/2002/281/ssr_stat.html for a typical bad example. The SSR_WRITE_RATE plot shows big spikes prior (ie, to the east of) the SAA. These come from the southern high latitudes, and we also get some from the northern zones. Presumably this is trapped electrons creating bremsstrahlung in the spacecraft (see David's paper), because its occurrence matches pretty well with the NOAA 90-degree electrons channels from POES. The dst index, see http://swdcdb.kugi.kyoto-u.ac.jp/dstdir/dst1/quick.html shows disturbances continuing for a substantial period that matches our SSR over-use pretty well. Data Gaps: Write pointer was moved to make room for VLA simultaneous shutter-open data: as entered in the tohban gaps log, 4-Oct-2002 15:03 5-oct-2002 11:35 Write pointer Other Issues: I (Hugh) think we should abandon the tohbans' shutter log; it has not been maintained well whereas David and the operators have good rapport for his log. We (Hugh and S"am) propose that we routinely delete shutter-closed data in favor of keeping the shutter open. Let us discuss the pros and cons. Tohban next week: Jim McTiernan
