Tohban report for Sept 23-29, 2003 H.S. Hudson 1. Solar activity Activity was not so low but there was nothing memorable to report. The GOES event statistics were: How many GOES flares occurred? Flares above B, C, M, X class were 15 17 0 And how many had good RHESSI coverage? Flares above B, C, M, X class were 9 10 0 And how many are listed in the RHESSI flare_list? Flares above B, C, M, X class were 10 10 0 How many RHESSI flares: 104 The discrepancy in the coverage statistics probably reflects computer problems over the weekend. It looks like Jim McTiernan has added a "total flares" entry (104), which because of this problem is roughly saying that RHESSI is seeing 10x as many events as GOES. 2. Problems There were SSW and other computer problems over the weekend, so that near-real-time data processing may be late. The QL metadata seem to be current at the time of writing. 3. Commanding Decimation: 262-22:50:01 start idpu_dec_active_vigorous Experiments with HV and with cooler power were carried out. D. Smith will report on this. Here's a copy of his e-mail with preliminary info: ++++++++++++++++++ DSMITH report from 9/22-23 The cryocooler was brought down about 4 "units", which corresponded to about 4W. Detector HV is commanded in fixed steps of about 19V. We operate G2 unsegmented at 80. Last week we found out that at 86 it segments for a few minutes then starts to desegment, and that at 90 it breaks down. Yesterday we tried 88, which gave one arc, then behaved well for about an hour, then started arcing with steadily increasing frequency. So we backed off to 87, which stayed good for an even shorter time before arcing, eventually reaching an almost uniform rate of about 1 every 90 seconds. So on the third pass we went back to 80 and unsegmented operation. Bob Lin would like to do an experiment where we operate segmented on the day side and unsegmented at night to see if the periodic retreats below segmentation "heal" the arcing problem temporarily. A long shot, but what the heck.
