Tohban report, 23-aug-2006 to 30-aug-2006 Hugh Hudson, hhudson@ssl.berkeley.edu 1. Solar Activity: There was one semi-major active region, NOAA 0905, on an otherwise solar-minimum Sun. This probably will be an interesting test case for SEP emission. It is showing jet behavior and the PFSS models show connectivity in the correct (N) hemisphere. See the examples of very fast bursts at 27-aug 00:15-01:15, for example; bigger fast events occurred later on. These are probably characteristic of microflare/jet sources at the leading polarity of this AR. This is quite an amazing swarm of fast events, somebody should write a paper about RHESSI's views of this. How many GOES flares occurred? Flares above B, C, M, X class were 43 2 0 0 And how many of these are listed in the RHESSI flare list? Flares above B, C, M, X class were 12 1 0 0 And how many had EXCELLENT coverage? Flares above B, C, M, X class were 6 0 0 0 There were RHESSI flares/GOES flares 43 / 45 over the time range 22-Aug-06 29-Aug-06 * FLASH! The Astronomy Picture of the Day (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/) for Aug. 30 reports this as possibly the first active region of the new cycle. 2. Memory Managment: We were suffering from memory increase all week, so Jeremy added the IECLIPSE commands effective 2006-240-18:54:29 UT. On the next day things already looked better, the tohban thought hopefully. Levels are now dropping below 20% at end of BGS passes. 3. Data Gaps: 27-aug 00:15 - 02:30 data missing. Could be interesting because of the possible SEPs from this region 4. Notes: * 24-aug 11:38 looks like a GRB but isn't listed, doesn't look like a detector glitch * 24-aug 15:46 similar, during orbit night * 26-aug 11:00 odd event, not in GRB list and not like a detector glitch 5. Next week: we should think about a quiet-Sun offpoint, it is looking optimal right now. The time for the offpoint would be four days from now, ie during BGS contact passes on Monday, Sep. 4 (Labor Day holiday). A no-go decision could be made on Sunday, Sep. 3. In view of the timing I suggest we plan to do this but do it a day late, namely the tohban makes a decision on Monday and the commanding gets done Tuesday. The last BGS pass on that day (Sep. 5) may be about noon. 6. Next week's tohban:
