************************************************************************** January 21, 1994 The peak rate and total counts of all flares in the BATSE solar flare catalog were recalculated on January 14, 1994 with a better livetime estimation and a more accurate correction for transmission through the aluminum window on the front surface of the detectors. The new livetime calculation computes a smaller livetime, resulting in larger fluxes which becomes important at rates greater than 100,000/s. The correction for the detector window is unchanged for fluxes incident normal to the detector surface and is smaller than the previous correction factor as the off-axis angle increases. Since the peak rate calculation includes a weighted sum over the two most sunward detectors, the net effect results in a smaller calculated photon flux. This correction is taken for a characteristic solar spectrum, and is not an explicit deconvolution for the spectrum of any specific event. As such it is meant only as a helpful estimate, and not as a final data product. As a rough guide to the combined effect of both changes use the table below which only depends on the size of the flare: peak rate (counts/ (s 2000cm^2)) change -------------------------------- ------ < 1000 flux is now smaller > 1000, < 10000 not much change > 10000 flux is now greater **************************************************************************
