Image Despike Tool - quick key S This uses the Mk I despiker designed to work with TRACE data to remove (at least partially) radiation spikes. The parameters can be tuned if necessary but be careful. The threshold determines the criteria for a spike. Lower thresholds kill smaller spikes but are also more likely to affect real data (i.e., holes in bright areas). It is the excess intensity of a point relative to its eight neighbors (expressed as a percentage). Values of 10% to 25% are reasonable. Points thus marked for extinction are replaced with one of the 16 values in the box surrounding the point at a distance of two pixels (i.e., the outer pixels in a 5x5 area). These points are sorted and level determines which one to use. Level = 7 picks the median value (or 8 depending on how you look at things), 0 picks the min and 15 the max. The median is usually a good choice. A special case is level = -1, this zeroes the pixel, useful for identifying which pixels get hit while looking for a good level to use. The process can be applied several times which helps wear down the larger hits. A value of 3 is enough for moderately corrupted data. Larger values may help for more severe cases. The auto update will cause the despike to be applied whenever new data is read into the "view" and also causes the despiking to be applied when a movie creation process is linked to this view. If you are happy with current values for the despike process, you can do a despike action for a view by just hitting the "s" key. A mouse click in the window may be necssary first to get "focus", otherwise the keystroke may go unnoticed. In genereal it is safe to click the a mouse button and then the s key. Be careful not to hold the key down, it will auto-repeat! To get rid of this window, press help again. To get rid of the tool window and this window, press dismiss.
