WSPEX USERS MANUAL FOR BATSE SOLAR FLARE ANALYSIS Written by Lanny Thompson, Arkansas State University August 1995 QUICK HELP GUIDE Steps for starting, running and peforming options in WSPEX 1. Telnet to SDAC. 2. Enter IDL. 3. Start WSPEX. 4. Restore a previously saved summary file. 5. Select the Developmental DRM (if necessary). 6. Set WSPEX to use the BATSE instruments. 7. Choose a flare number to be used by WSPEX. 8. Preview the data file. 9. Choose the proper detector for the flare. 10. Display the light curve. 11. Zoom in time. 12. Change the y-axis scale, uints, or range (optional). 13. Select new energy band values and change the scale if necessary (optional). 14. Select the background to subtract off. 15. Select the fit intervals WSPEX is to use. 16. Save as summary file (optional). 16. Display a spectral plot (COUNTS or PHOTONS). 17. Adjust the x and y axis if necessary. 18. Select the energy range to perform the fit over. 19. Bin the data if necessary. 20. Choose the fit model to use. 21. View, change, free, and fix the fit parameters. 22. Perform the fit and review the result produced by WSPEX. 23. Repeat changing the parameters and fitting until an accepte fit is acheived. 24. Leave WSPEX. 25. Exit IDL. Actions and procedures that can be performed at any time. 1. The printing or saving of a plot (provided a plot has been made by WSPEX). 2. The Displaying of the options of settings from the SPECTRAL FITS or TIME HISTORY widget buttons.
