!XLOADCT

             Adjust LUT
             ----------

VDS data are displayed as a 2-d image. A special
lookup table is employed as the default.

If you wish to change the current LUT, click on
this button and the standard IDL routine XLOADCT
    will be loaded.

Note that the original LUT can be reloaded via an
    option in the 'Reset' menu.

!BLANK
Using the cursor on the image
               -----------------------------

The action of the cursor within the image area
depends on the setting of the 'Window Interaction'
    buttons.

Note that when GIS is selected, the cursor has no
effect in the plot area unless only ONE GIS band is
displayed. The GIS band to display is selected with
the buttons below and to the right of the plot
    area.

!CHECK_LLO

               Checking a database
               -------------------

    Not implemented yet.

Eventually this function will allow the user to
check whether a database entry already exists that
matches the current details in the mk_raster
    windows.

!COMP10

               Compression
               -----------

To reduce the amount of CDS data that has to be
telemetered down, several data compression schemes
have been provided in the on-board software.

This menu allows the user to specify which
compression scheme is to be used, together with, in
some cases, a selection of the particular mode of
    operation for that scheme.

The actual compression factors achievable by each
of the schemes are TBD on real CDS data.

In the meantime for the purposes of calculating the
    telemetry requirements, the following assumptions
    are made:

           Scheme Compression factor
      1 (straight copy) 1
      2 (truncate 12 bits) 1.33
      3 (VBWL - all options) 2.0
4 (Sum over lines) defined by window size
5 (Sum over window) defined by window size

    windows.

!DISP_ALL

                      Display mode
                      ------------

These buttons allow the user to change the mode of
    display of the data.

ALL - means that the full wavelength range of data
will be displayed and line windows will be
    superimposed upon that display.

!DISP_WONLY

                      Display mode
                      ------------

WINDOWS - means that only data within the defined
line windows will be displayed. For the VDS they
are still displayed in their 'correct' location
within the overall maximum possible image area.
For the GIS, separate plots are given for each
window - these can quickly become illegible when
    the number > 4

!DISP_FONLY
                      Display mode
                      ------------

FLAGS - signifies that only the data from windows
designated as flag windows are to be displayed.
See FLAG mode under 'Window interaction mode'.

!EXIT_QUIT

                  Exit, quietly
                  -------------

When MK_RASTER is finished you may either chose a
quiet exit with this menu selection. If an input
parameter was supplied, the full mk_raster
structure will be contained within it on exit from
    mk_raster.

!EXIT_SAVE

                  Exit, and save structure
                  ------------------------

This exit option will automatically save the
mk_raster structure in an IDL save file
(mk_raster_struct.save). If you RESTORE that file
in the futrue, the save structure will be in the
    variable tp_obs.

from the selected detector. This is done
independently of whether any spectral lines are
selected in that region and this setting overrides
the existence of any spectral lines.

For instance if you switch on selection of all GIS1

associated with it. Enter the description (max 50
chars.) to be associated with the Line List in this
    box.

NB. This is the only description (of the four) that
requires user input. It is always safer to hit
    'return' after entering the description.

!DWIN

         Current Data Extraction Window Description
         ------------------------------------------

Each entry in the databases has a description
associated with it. The description automatically
associated with the Data Extraction Windows is
    displayed in this box.

NB. Even though this widget is editable, at the
moment any user input is overwritten by the
    automatic compilation of the description.

Note that if this window contains the message
'Too many data windows', it means it! Reduce
the number of spectral lines specified.

!EDIT_LINE

               Edit line list
               --------------

Although the specification of spectral lines can be
done graphically using the cursor in the image
window below, sometimes it is preferable to edit
the numerical entries directly. Selecting this
button will take you into a mode where the line
    list can be edited.

!VDS_SEEV

A general selection of help information is
    available by selecting this entry.

!HELP_ALL

Hard copy of raster etc. details
               --------------------------------

If this entry is selected, a printout will be
produced of details of the current raster, its
variation, the line list and the derived data
    window extraction list.

!HELP_RAS

Hard copy of fundamental raster details

    raster.

!HELP_LIN

Hard copy of line list details
             ------------------------------

If this entry is selected, a printout will be
produced of details of the current line list.

!HELP_DWI

Hard copy of data extraction window details
             -------------------------------------------

If this entry is selected, a printout will be
produced of details of the current data window
    extraction list.

!WRITE_ALL

                 Storing information in the databases.
                 -------------------------------------

Once the details of the required raster and its
dependents have been defined, the information
should be stored in the databases, either your
private ones or, if you have the privilege, in the
project databases. It is possible to store the
information on the fundamental raster, the
variation, the line list and the extraction windows
separately using the other selections in this
menu. This selection will attempt to write
entries for all of those. If the entry is new then
an ID number will be assigned. If the entry
already exists a message to that effect is given,
    and the existing ID shown.

NB it is strongly recommended that this selection
(ie ALL) is used to store details even if only a
minor change has been made to the information (eg
adding background windows). Its use does not
result in any storage of redundant information but
may save a lot of confusion.

!WRITE_LLO

                 Storing information in the databases.
                 -------------------------------------

If you are determined to be an expert, use this
selection to save the current line list only in the
    appropriate database.

!WRITE_DWO

                 Storing information in the databases.
                 -------------------------------------

If you are determined to be an expert, use this
selection to save the data extraction window list
    only in the appropriate database.

!WRITE_RAF

                 Storing information in the databases.
                 -------------------------------------

If you are determined to be an expert, use this
selection to save the fundamental raster definition
    only in the appropriate database.

!WRITE_RAV

                 Storing information in the databases.
                 -------------------------------------

If you are determined to be an expert, use this
selection to save the raster variation only in the
    appropriate database.

!WRITE_HELP

                 Storing information in the databases.
                 -------------------------------------

This will give some help (warnings) about the use
of any selection in this menu other than the 'save
    all' option.

!INST1

              NIS Instrument
              --------------

The CDS has two instruments, the Normal Incidence
and Grazing Incidence Spectrographs (NIS or GIS).

The NIS (selected by this button) covers the
wavelength regions (310-380)A and (517-633)A in
    two separate spectra.

Various other selectable items are only relevant to
one instrument or the other. The appropriate
windows to allow their selection are made available
    when the instrument is chosen.

!INST2

              GIS Instrument
              --------------

The CDS has two instruments, the Normal Incidence
and Grazing Incidence Spectrographs (NIS or GIS).

The GIS (selectable with this button) has four
    detectors covering the approximate wavelength
    ranges

    155 - 224
    261 - 346
    395 - 496
    662 - 787 A respectively.

Various other selectable items are only relevant to
one instrument or the other. The appropriate
windows to allow their selection are made available
    when the instrument is chosen.

!SSSX

              Mirror step size
              ----------------

Enter in this box the size of steps to be made by
the Mirror during a raster. The values are in
    arcseconds.

One mirror step corresponds to approximately 2
arcsecs. Only integer steps of the mirror are
possible so this box will only accept values which
    are a multiple of 2.

The FITS data file will reflect the true size of
the mirror steps (ie 2.034 arcsec)

!SSSY
              Slit step size
              --------------

Enter in this box the size of steps to be made by
the Slit during a raster. The values are in
    arcseconds.

One slit step corresponds to approximately 1
arcsec. Only integer steps of the slit are
    possible.

The FITS data file will reflect the true size of
the slit steps (ie 1.017 arcsec)

NB. It is not possible to move the slit when using
the NIS. This box is therefore not editable when
    the NIS instrument is selected.

!NSX

              Mirror locations
              ----------------

Enter in this box the number of LOCATIONS at which
the mirror is to be set during a raster scan.

Remember also to enter the NUMBER of sample points
for the mirror NOT the number of steps to be made
during the raster. A degenerate raster (ie a single
sample position) will, therefore, have (1,1) mirror
and slit positions and the step size will be
irrelevant. A raster with (3,3) positions and a
step size of (10,10) arcseconds will sample data
over only a (20,20) arcsecond area (neglecting the
    actual slit size).

Note that the logic of a 2-d raster using mirror and
    slit steps is

for number of raster repeats (set in mk_study)
       for each mirror posn
          for each slit posn
             expose
          endfor
       endfor
    endfor

This logic applies even if the step size degenerates
to zero (ie a sit and stare raster)

!NSY

              Slit locations
              --------------

Enter in this box the number of LOCATIONS at which
the slit is to be set during a raster scan.

NB. The number of slit locations is NOT applicable
to rasters which use the NIS - this box is
therefore not editable when that instrument is
    selected.

Remember also to enter the NUMBER of sample points
for the slit NOT the number of steps to be made
during the raster. A degenerate raster (ie a single
sample position) will, therefore, have (1,1) mirror
and slit positions and the step size will be
irrelevant. A raster with (3,3) positions and a
step size of (10,10) arcseconds will sample data
over only a (20,20) arcsecond area (neglecting the
    actual slit size).

Note that the logic of a 2-d raster using mirror and
    slit steps is

for number of raster repeats (set in mk_study)
       for each mirror posn
          for each slit posn
             expose
          endfor
       endfor
    endfor

This logic applies even if the step size degenerates
to zero (ie a sit and stare raster)

This reset menu is provided to allow various parts
(or all) of the MK_RASTER parameters to be reset to
    default values.

Selecting the 'DETECTOR PARAMETERS' option will reset
the user-settable VDS parameters (orientation and
map option) to their default values.

!DBASE_RASP

Selection a raster from the databases
          -------------------------------------

This menu selection will allow the user to select a
fundamental raster and any of its variations from
    the available and selected database.

Since the line list ID and data extraction window
list ID are contained within a raster variation
definition, the line and window lists, defined by
the raster variation will also be loaded.

!DBASE_LINE

Selection a line/data extraction list from the databases
    --------------------------------------------------------

This menu selection will allow the user to select a
line list and any of its associated window
extraction lists from the available and selected
    database.

The raster and variation details are not changed
(except the line and window list IDs contained in
the raster variation are set to zero (undefined).

!SLIT1

             Slits
             -----

The choice of which slit to use is made by a
pull-down-menu selection. CDS has 6 slits
available, and each detector can use any of the
    six.

The numerical values quoted in parentheses are the
    slit sizes in arcseconds.

It is anticipated that the NIS will normally be
used with the long (240 arcsec) slits and the GIS
with the smaller 2 or 4 arcsec square slits.

The large (90x240) slit is intended for
    overlappagram type images.

the CCD into memory and then telemetered down
(normal) or for the data to stay in memory and be
accumulated with the next exposure's data. (I
    think???)

!VDS_MOD1

             VDS parameters
             --------------

The VDS READOUT mode under normal operations is
expected to be 'quadrant' - see help on VDS
background. It is anticipated that only a hardware
anomaly will force a change from this.

!VDS_VOLT

             VDS parameters
             --------------

The MCP VOLTAGE affects the gain of the detector
and certain calibrations (eg linearity) are
    voltage-dependant.

!VDS_OFF3
             VDS parameters
             --------------

Owing to optical misalignments the two VDS spectra
will not lie exactly parallel to the CCD rows and
will not abut at the CCD centre. The VDS OFFSETS
are provided to allow the data extraction windows
to find the spectra when they are not at the
    nominal position.

Note that the offset in the 300A range is
considered negative ie it moves the location of the
actual spectrum away from the CCD centre row.

!VDS_DEWS

PLOT EXTRACTION WINDOWS allows the user to see the
extraction windows and VDS hardware windows that
    result from the current setup.

!WH_SLIDER

             Window Height
             -------------

For the VDS spectra it is possible to limit the
extent of the spatial information retrieved from
the long slit images. The 'normal' (2x240) VDS
slit will give spectral information from a region
along the slit covering 240 arcseconds. If for
some reason a smaller spatial coverage is required,
use the window height parameter to change the
extent of the spatial data returned. A single
value will apply to all windows.

!WWRANGE3
                 Extraction window width
                 -----------------------

The width of extraction windows may be set with the
slider below. The scale of values represented by
the slider is set here - either [0,100] or [0,1000]

                 Extraction window width
                 -----------------------

Use this slider to set the extraction window width.
The scale of the slider is set in the menu above.
You may also just type in a value in the box.

!WWRANGE

                 Extraction window width
                 -----------------------

If you do not like sliders, you may type in an
extraction window width here (in pixels).

!LINE_ADD

                 Window interaction mode
                 -----------------------

In order for the user to be able to interact via
the cursor with the display window in a variety of
ways, the mode of interaction must be explicitly
set. Set one of these mutually exclusive buttons
to select that mode. Note that for GIS no
interaction is allowed until the display is in
single-band mode - see "Display GIS band".

ADD - will add a line to the current line list
(this can be used to start a line list as well).
The line window will have the characteristics as
defined by the current MK_RASTER settings. The
line will be centred on the clicked cursor
position. A maximum of 20 lines is currently
    accepted.

!LINE_DELETE

                 Window interaction mode
                 -----------------------

In order for the user to be able to interact via
the cursor with the display window in a variety of
ways, the mode of interaction must be explicitly
set. Set one of these mutually exclusive buttons
to select that mode. Note that for GIS no
interaction is allowed until the display is in
single-band mode - see "Display GIS band".

DEL - will delete a line from an existing list. In
this mode just click on any pixel within the line
window to have the line deleted.

!LINE_MOVE

                 Window interaction mode
                 -----------------------

In order for the user to be able to interact via
the cursor with the display window in a variety of
ways, the mode of interaction must be explicitly
set. Set one of these mutually exclusive buttons
to select that mode. Note that for GIS no
interaction is allowed until the display is in
single-band mode - see "Display GIS band".

MOV - allows the user to move line windows around.
Click on any pixel within the line window to 'pick
up' the line. The line will be moved to a position
centred on the cursor when the cursor button is
released. It will not simply be moved by a distance
corresponding to the cursor movement from button
press to release. Note that windows cannot move
from one spectrum to another, in other words only
the horizontal value of the cursor is read.

!LINE_IDENT

                 Window interaction mode
                 -----------------------

In order for the user to be able to interact via
the cursor with the display window in a variety of
ways, the mode of interaction must be explicitly
set. Set one of these mutually exclusive buttons
to select that mode. Note that for GIS no
interaction is allowed until the display is in
single-band mode - see "Display GIS band".

ID - gives details of the spectral line contained
within the window or just details of the cursor
position and the data value at that point if the
cursor is not within a defined window.

!LINE_FLAG

                 Window interaction mode
                 -----------------------

In order for the user to be able to interact via
the cursor with the display window in a variety of
ways, the mode of interaction must be explicitly
set. Set one of these mutually exclusive buttons
to select that mode. Note that for GIS no
interaction is allowed until the display is in
single-band mode - see "Display GIS band".

FLAG - will nominate as a flag window any window
identified (up to a maximum of 3). To clear the
flag window definitions, use the RESET option.

!LINE_PROF

                 Window interaction mode
                 -----------------------

In order for the user to be able to interact via
the cursor with the display window in a variety of
ways, the mode of interaction must be explicitly
set. Set one of these mutually exclusive buttons
to select that mode. Note that for GIS no
interaction is allowed until the display is in
single-band mode - see "Display GIS band".

PROF - will enter the profile display mode.
Currently only uses crudest profiling routine. Will
be upgraded when Stein Vidar rejoins the fray. Exit
by pressing the right hand mouse button.
