Diagram of the High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager
Hard x-ray and gamma-ray imaging are obtained with 9 rotating pairs of grids. The rotation allows the flare emission to be observed at many different angles and, therefore, allows better images to be constructed. High-resolution spectroscopy is obtained from 3 keV to 20 MeV using cooled germanium detectors.
