Customizing the IDL Startup Configuration

Customizing a personal IDL startup file is optional:

1.    Open up a text editor (Notepad for example) and use it to create a new IDL startup file.

2.    Save the file (e.g. idl_startup.pro) in a convenient location on your pc.  For example, you might want to place it in c:\ssw\site\setup.  Don't save it in any of the ssw instrument subdirectories or it will be erased during an update.  Exit the text editor.

3.    In the ssw setup directory, locate the file named "sswidl.bat".
If you installed ssw on your c:\ drive, you will find it here:  c:\ssw\site\setup\sswidl.bat.

4.
Open the file in a text editor. You will see the following text:

rem A personal startup can be defined by editing the following statement
       rem set SSW_PERSONAL_STARTUP=c:\idl_ssw\idl_startup.pro

5.  Remove the
rem statement from the second line and modify the path and/or the idl startup file name appropriately.  Your changes would look like this if you followed the suggestions in step #2 above:

rem A personal startup can be defined by editing the following statement
       set SSW_PERSONAL_STARTUP=c:\ssw\site\setup\idl_startup.pro

6.
Users can also add additional instruments to the following line:

        set SSW_INSTR=hessi xray spex

7.  Save the changes and exit the text editor.
