Out of Environment Space Error

Some Windows 95, 98 and Me users will not be able to successfully start the RHESSI software after completing the SolarSoft installation.  The most common cause for this is insufficient environment variable space.

1.  You need to first verify that the problem you are experiencing is caused by a lack of environment variable space.  Locate the file named "sswidl.bat".  If you have installed SSW on your c:\ drive, you will find it here: c:\ssw\site\setup\sswidl.bat.

2. Open the file "sswidl.bat" for editing (e.g. Notepad).  Add the command PAUSE at the end of the file.  Save the changes and exit the editor.

3. Start up an SSWIDL session.  Does the dos window that appears contain the error ""Out of environment space"?  Try running the command "pr_path" from the IDL command prompt.  Do all of the instrument paths (advanced users) seem correct?  If you answer yes to either of these questions continue to the next step.

4.  Close the current SSWIDL session.  If you haven't already done so, create a shortcut on your desktop pointing to the file "sswidl.bat".

5.  Right click on the shortcut and choose "Properties".  Click the "Memory" tab at the top of the "Shortcut" panel.

7.  Change the "Initial Environment" setting to it's highest value.  Click "Apply" then click "OK".

8.  Start a new SSWIDL session.  Is the problem resolved?  If so, remove the PAUSE command that you added in the steps above.  If not, contact Merrick Berg or Kim Tolbert for further assistance.

Windows 2000 users who experience an an "Unable to allocate memory: to expand environment" error in the IDL output log should correct the problem by following these steps:

1.   Click the "Start" button.  Click "Settings" then click "Control Panel".

2.   In the "Control Panel" window that appears, double click on the "System" icon.

3.   In the "System Properties" window that appears, click on the "Advanced" tab at the top.

4.   Click "Environment Variables...".

5.   Locate the "System variables" section in the lower half of the window.  Highlight the "ComSpec" system variable.

6.   Click "Edit...".  In the "Edit System Variable" window that appears, edit the "Variable value:" by appending "/e:32768 /p" to the variable so that it reads:

%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /e:32768 /p            (The path may vary slightly on your own system.)

Unfortunately, environment variable space in Windows 2000 is limited to a maximum of 32,769 Kb.  If the error still persists after making the changes above you may find it necessary to remove some of the instruments defined in the environment variable SSW_INSTR.
